artist (81) detained for “digital rape” of a minor for 7 years | News from Noida

Noida: An 81-year-old cartoonist was arrested on Sunday for allegedly raping a 17-year-old student, who was in the custody of his partner. Police say the alleged assault began when the girl was just 10 years old and continued for the next seven years until her arrest.
The artist was detained for “digital rape” – forced penetration with fingers and toes – following a complaint from his partner.
Digital rape was only considered “rape” in December 2012, when the Nirbhaya gang rape sparked a series of reforms to sexual violence laws.
The defendant, married with two children, is from Allahabad and moved to Noida with his family 20 years ago. His current partner, whom he met after reaching Noida, moved in with him and his family a few years later. The artist is separated from his wife, who has returned to Allahabad with their children.
The man’s girlfriend is a 40-year-old woman from Delhi. “Eight years ago, the artist’s lodging went to Himachal Pradesh for a job. One of her collaborators sent her daughter to live with her in Noida so that the minor girl could benefit from a quality education. The accused started stalking the girl from 2015 when she was just 10 years old,” Additional Deputy Police Commissioner Ranvijay Singh told TOI.
Frightened, the girl did not complain for years. “But over the past month she has started recording her advances, mostly as audio files. She collected evidence and showed it to the resident partner. The woman then approached the police,” Singh said.
Noida Police booked the man under IPC Sections 376 (rape), 323 (wilfully causing bodily harm) and 506 (criminal intimidation), and under Sections 5 (aggravated penetrative sexual assault) and 6 (aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the Protection Child Victims of Sexual Offenses Act.
The accused was brought before a local court on Sunday and taken into custody for 14 days.
