CIRCLEVILLE – ArtsaRound is organizing a special gala and performance in honor of Norma McCombs.
The four-week show will begin next weekend on November 5 and run through Sunday November 28. ArtsaRound will host the gala on November 6 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The McCombs Tribute Show will feature “a variety of landscapes, wildlife and still life art with pumpkins that will be available for viewing and purchase.” McCombs passed away on July 3, 2020.
ArtsaRound President Dale Herron said the show, which is titled Norma McCombs Tribute Show, honors her memory and the contributions of the once “beloved” local artist.
âNorma took advantage of all the workshops, correspondence courses and scholarship opportunities that were offered to her,â said Herron. “McCombs was a self-taught artist who began painting at the age of nine.”
The mediums used by the artist were oil, watercolor, acrylic, colored pencils, pastel chalks, ink, graphite and collages.
McCombs’ work has been exhibited and sold at The Pump House in Chillicothe, the Welcome Center in Circleville, and the Circleville Pumpkin Show. She has won numerous ribbons and awards from various county fairs and state competitions. She was also a member of the Pump House Center for The Arts in Chillicothe and the Aiken Artist Guild in Aiken, South Carolina.
She designed and sold greeting cards for all occasions and did consignment work.
Gallery director JP Pennell said McCombs was also an accomplished self-taught calligrapher and taught art whenever she had the chance. Then, at age 64, she trained in digital art and began making her own prints and greeting cards.
âI remember Norma fondly. She was always ready to donate some of her work to fundraisers and help the arts community, âsaid Pennell.
âShe was also a member of the Pickaway Arts Guild. A group that later inspired our non-profit arts group, ArtsaRound. Without his involvement, our organization would not exist.
The gallery is open Fridays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., although hours may vary depending on volunteer availability.
