Interconnection improvements are underway for data center customers in Tokyo, Osaka, Singapore, Hong Kong and Sydney following a new partnership between Digital Realty and Ciena.

Both offer new connectivity options to further empower data communities connected to PlatformDIGITAL through the integration of Ciena’s Data Center Interconnect (DCI).

The two have signed an agreement to provide open, secure and dynamic cloud-based interconnectivity in a move that Digital Realty describes as a “milestone” in its roadmap for open interconnection. Previous steps have included the partnership with Zayo, announced in July.

“Digital Realty is changing the topography of the Internet in some of the world’s largest and fastest growing metropolises, particularly in the APAC region. The region has grown into the largest data center market and is on the way to becoming an enterprise data center. The collaboration with Ciena places Digital Realty in an excellent position to meet growing demand and enable customer growth through our combined capabilities and our common interest in a new open and sustainable model of interconnection, ”said Mark Smith, Managing Director APAC at Digital Realty.

Ciena’s DCI solution will enable Digital Realty customers to reach supplier ecosystems beyond primary customer deployment; scale the data center footprint and establish connectivity between deployments; and enable Digital Realty to be a “one stop shop for interconnectivity”.

In turn, Digital Realty customers will also benefit from extensive data center options without compromising cloud and network connectivity needs by choosing facilities connected to high-end Internet gateways.

“With a more dynamic network that can adapt to escalating demands, Digital Realty transcends the boundaries of on-demand content and positions its clients for success. Ciena’s DCI expertise also helps accelerate Digital Realty’s sustainability initiatives to minimize environmental impact and optimize energy use to improve performance, ”said Rick Seeto, vice president and general manager, Asia-Pacific, Ciena.
