Ultimate Fighting Championship(CFU) Francois Ngannou has made the decision to receive half of his UFC 270 salary in bitcoin, as ties between the digital currency and sports continue.
On the occasion of the heavyweight champion’s partnership with the mobile payment service CashApp, the deal comes at a time when Ngannou is gearing up to headline the UFC’s first numbered card of the year.
On Twitter, the Franco-Cameroonian said: “After doing a lot of research on bitcoin, I really believe this is the future of money, man. Bitcoin is precious, secure and no one can take care of it.
Additionally, CashApp is also doubling down on its marketing approach for the event, while looking to engage MMA fans with a $300,000 giveaway.
In other collaborations, mma journalist, Ariel Helwani, also recently revealed on Twitter that Ngannou will be wearing the Epix X Chrono watch for the Jan. 21 weigh-ins. the Jacob & Co. the watch sells for $50,000 as he continues to research alternative and creative options for collaborations.
This announcement follows the launch last year of a “first of its kind” NFT collection with a prolific digital artist. Bosslogic, becoming the first MMA fighter to introduce such a version. This collection was said to create art that “encapsulated Ngannou’s deep African roots and presence in the world of MMA”.
This was considered a successful deal by generating $581,038.88 on makersplaceco, while it was also later reported that these NFTs ended up generating more money than Ngannou’s guaranteed purse for the Stipe Miocic fight.
