When we think of portable monitors, we often conjure up images of devices that look and feel cheap, have poor color representation, and can only be used for the most basic tasks.

Climb the Innocn 15k1f; a 15.6-inch Full HD, OLED, portable monitor that knocks out many of its competitors. Priced at $419.99, the device is a great choice if you’re looking for a high-quality display that you can take with you anywhere that meets a number of needs.

Let’s take a closer look at this dynamite screen.

What’s in the box?

The Innocn 15k1f comes in a box not much bigger than the screen itself. Inside you will find:

Carefully designed construction

One thing that strikes you about the Innocn 15k1f when you take it out of the box is the level of craftsmanship that has gone into the device. It looks and feels very professional. Plus, with overall dimensions (without case) of 14.2 x 9.2 x 0.2 inches and weighing just 1.6 lbs, it’s a monitor we can definitely call portable.

The design is really sleek, with a matte finish to the metallic aluminum casing, which arrives in a lovely copper brown hue. In the center at the bottom, under the screen, you have the Innocn logo.

USE VIDEO OF THE DAY

The top right corner houses the controls. On the top edge of the monitor’s corner is the power button, and to the right of that is the LED indicator, so you know when the device is powered up and working. The right edge of the corner of the monitor has nondescript up and down keys. All keys have several functions, which we will describe in the next section.

In the center of the left and right edges are the stereo speakers, indicated by the holes drilled into the sides, for the sound to escape.

At the bottom right you have two USB Type-C inputs and the mini-HDMI as well.

The case is made of silicone and plastic and is available in gray and black. It is a magnetic case combined with a rubber bumper, and the magnetic section folds in on itself to function as a stand. A surprisingly robust one!

All in all, a nice device, and we haven’t even turned it on yet.

How easy is Innocn 15k1f to use?

Innocn 15k1f upper right corner buttons

Considering it’s a portable monitor, the operation is decidedly easy. To cover these multi-function buttons, long-press the power button for three seconds to turn the device on and off, while a single click while using the monitor opens the OSD menu, and once in the menu, will enter the submenus. Pressing and holding the power button for 1 second in the OSD menu exits the current option/submenu.

The up key will increase the volume or, in the OSD menu, move the menu to the left and increase any user-operated progress bar (like increase brightness, for example). The down key decreases the volume or, in the OSD menu, moves the menu options to the right and decreases any user-operated progress bar (such as lowering the contrast).

The LED indicator helps in operation. When it’s lit blue, you know the screen is working. Orange, and the screen is on standby. Off, and the power is off, as you’d expect.

OSD navigation is simple and you can access a wide variety of customizable options here.

The home screen lets you access other menus and adjust brightness, contrast, and volume. There’s a Profiles menu, which lets you create up to six different screen profiles, so you can have one for gaming and one for reading an e-book. You have the Color Temperature menu, giving you the option to change the RGB values.

You also have a Color menu, which allows you to calibrate settings such as image saturation and sharpness. The Type-C and HDMI menu options switch between these two inputs as a source. Finally, you have the Reset option, to factory reset your monitor, and the Exit option, which (in case you hadn’t guessed) exits the OSD.

I found button presses, when navigating the menu and using the device, to be responsive. They’re not finicky, so I haven’t had any issues where, for example, I held my finger on the power button for just over a second and turned the device off – the press times on the buttons are true to Innocn’s word, basically.

Perfect performance

Place for performance, then. I have to admit, I’m always a bit skeptical when it comes to portable displays. I often find them lacking in one way or another, especially when they claim to be great for gaming. So, is the Innocn 15k1f good for gaming? And what about other applications, such as a reading monitor, watching movies, and a screen for graphics applications such as Photoshop?

To test the monitor’s gaming prowess, I hooked it up to my laptop and logged into my Game Pass account. Knowing that No Man’s Sky is an incredibly colorful and detailed game, this was my first stop. The OLED display really shines here. The contrast between colors (which, let’s face it, is pretty wild in No Man’s Sky) is wonderfully represented (to the point that my illustrative photography won’t do it justice).

Brightness, another characteristic of NMS graphics, is also at its peak, with Innocn’s OLED display handling this aspect with ease. Its 60Hz refresh rate means there’s virtually no motion blur and no noticeable stutter. With 120Hz refresh rates becoming the norm, some gamers might not see the 15k1f as a viable option, but remember this is a portable monitor, not your massive gaming monitor ( Innocn also has a rather meaty 4K desktop screen).

The same gamers may also scoff at Full HD 1080p resolution, preferring 2K or 4K. However, it is a 15.6 inch monitor. At this size, Full HD 1080p still looks really, really nice, especially on an OLED screen. I enjoyed my lot playing NMS on the Innocn 15k1f as much as I did on my Sony Bravia; the picture quality is so good. Not good at 4K level, but excellent for a portable monitor.

Innocn 15k1f fractals hd video

Likewise, the video is excellent. I first went with a nice fractal video to demonstrate the colorful display, and it looked lovely, with the 100% DCI-P3 color gamut ensuring colors show up when they’re supposed to. Color representation is excellent in live action videos, with no washed out reddish brown where there should be a vibrant scarlet tone instead, or a cast full of people looking uncomfortable instead of awkward. to look super tanned, for example.

I also tested the monitor with some simple Photoshop tasks. Color is of the utmost importance here, and the 15k1f didn’t let me down in this test either. Performance seems excellent, whatever the task.

Sound-wise, the speakers aren’t amazing, although you get stereo sound through two of them. I find this is where every portable monitor I’ve tested fails, with overdone highs and mids, and not a huge amount of bass. That said, they’re better than most speakers that come with other portable monitors I’ve used.

Innocn 15k1f enclosure in use

Are you going to make any noise with this device, though? Unlikely. If you do, it will be through your gaming headset, headphones, or external speakers, so this point is a bit moot. You won’t get a cinematic sound experience from portable monitor speakers, but you shouldn’t expect that either.

Another small complaint is the very bright glossy screen. Trying to find an angle where light doesn’t reflect can be tricky in well-lit spaces. However, sit down in front of the monitor (which you would do most of the time) and a sea of vivid color eliminates those reflections, helped by the screen’s 400-nit brightness.

Overall, the Innocn 15k1f is a great little second screen and, in a pinch, has the performance power to step in as your main screen when you’re on the go.

Should you buy the Innocn 15k1f?

Yes you should. If you’re not looking for a 4K display, but want something that still delivers excellent image quality, then the 15k1f is your ideal portable partner. It’s small and light enough to take with you anywhere, and if you take your S-Series on the go, like this writer, you can play just about anywhere you want!

With its screen capabilities for graphic design applications, as well as its movie prowess, we’ve got a great all-around device that beats its competitors out of the park.
