The Carbon Leadership Forum at the College of Built Environments at the University of Washington provides an exceptional opportunity for a building and materials researcher. The Carbon Leadership Forum, a research organization based at the College of Built Environment at the University of Washington, is seeking a collaborative building and materials researcher to help execute our mission to accelerate the decarbonization of the building sector. by eliminating the carbon incorporated in building materials and construction through collective action.

Embedded carbon refers to the greenhouse gas emissions generated by the manufacture, transportation, installation, maintenance and disposal of construction materials used in buildings, roads and other infrastructure. We need to reduce embodied carbon by 40-65% by 2030 to meet the reduction scenarios defined by the IPCC to avoid the catastrophic effects of climate change, yet current building design and construction practices do not. fail to adequately process the incorporated carbon and make significant progress. We believe that solid multidisciplinary collaborative research on embedded carbon and decarbonization pathways, combined with accessible tools and resources, is essential to progress in the building sector.

The Carbon Leadership Forum (CLF) is based on three strategic pillars to help us achieve our mission:

Advanced data and methods: We align, assess and advance data, tools and lifecycle assessment methodology to increase access and availability of robust data for effective decision making; Informing Effective and Fair Policies: We develop research, analysis and models of policy language and act as technical advisers to inform policy making. Our work covers local, state, federal and corporate policies; and Building a Community for Impact: We are building and bringing together a diverse network of leaders through our online forum and regional hubs to enable widespread action to reduce embedded carbon

The Buildings and Materials Researcher would be responsible for carrying out the research and analysis, developing guidance documents and educational resources, and raising awareness across the design community to improve quality. , the accuracy and efficiency of tools, methods and performance data for buildings that address carbon. The buildings and materials researcher would work collaboratively within an integrated team with backgrounds in architecture, engineering, environmental policy and materials manufacturing. This position will report to the LCA Data and Methods Principal Investigator and will be part of the CLF Principal Research Team.

As a building and materials researcher, you will have the opportunity to work in collaboration with our in-house research team, as well as with architectural and engineering firms and research consortia across North America. . You will learn a suite of analytical tools to assess environmental impacts and compare materials, products, assemblies, and entire buildings. You will have the opportunity to develop more in-depth expertise on one or more material supply chains (such as concrete, steel, plastics, wood and other bio-based materials). All researchers should present the results of the analysis verbally, in written form and with diagrams / graphs.

This position requires experience in the areas of building performance, calculation, embodied carbon assessments or life cycle assessment (LCA). This position will benefit from experience in architectural design, engineering or materials research, but such experience is not required. Depending on the level of experience, the CLF will provide internal resources and mentorship for the training.

Duties and Responsibilities:

To research

Conduct research to support the development of accessible, reliable and reliable LCA tools, methods and data, as well as the adoption of these tools in practice.

This includes:

Develop new knowledge, data and resources to advance embedded carbon data and methodology.
Advance the state of the practice of LCA and carbon accounting by developing and implementing projects that include:
LCA practical guides for the building sector
Comparative studies on materials and buildings
New methods for performing LCA of the whole building
Integration of carbon reduction strategies embodied in practice.
Extensive research into material supply chains, such as wood or other bio-based materials
Research on new carbon storage or sequestration technologies and their representation in carbon accounting
Conduct interviews and convene stakeholders to inform and evaluate CLF research
Management of project meetings and tasks for research projects
Monitor and communicate internally relevant trends in the building, industry and energy sectors
Review and track relevant research and reports
Lead and / or assist in the preparation and review of reports, articles and presentations to communicate research results, including visual representations of data
Serve on relevant advisory committees
Interface with clients, partners and UW research teams

Education and awareness

Build embedded carbon accounting and LCA modeling capacities by the architecture, engineering and construction community through presentations and training to designers, students and interested groups, including:

Make presentations on climate literacy, LCA, decarbonization strategies, results of CLF studies
Present at webinars / events developed by external organizations.
Respond to requests for technical expertise and advice from designers, industry, NGO partners and other stakeholders
Develop educational resources and tools that support the adoption of LCA and carbon accounting on design projects, including: case studies, primers, reports, tool reviews, technical notes and training

Organizational development

Understand the major strategic objectives of the Carbon Leadership Forum and contribute to their execution and refinement.
Uses a network of peers to expand technical capabilities and identify new research opportunities.
Supports the ongoing administrative needs of the CLF such as grant development, text editing, article writing, etc.

Qualifications required

Master’s degree in architecture, engineering, building sciences, computer science, environmental studies / forestry or related field

1 year of related experience

Participation in carbon accounting, building performance analysis, tool development or other forms of research and analysis related to the building, industry and / or forestry sectors.
General knowledge of LCA data, methods and application in design optimization.
Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
Ability to analyze and visualize data using tools such as Excel, Tableau and / or other similar software
Experience contributing to complex projects and diverse teams with demonstrated success stories.
Basic understanding of the building / construction industry
Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive work and learning environment.

Equivalent education / experience will replace all minimum qualifications, except where there are legal requirements, such as license / certification / registration.


Work experience in the building / construction industry
Experience using entire building LCA software, LCA datasets and environmental product declarations.
Experience in using life cycle assessment software (Gabi, SimaPro or OpenLCA) to perform life cycle assessments of building materials and products.
Experience in scripting using one or more of the following: Python, R, Java D3 or other similar tool
Experience in initiating and executing a research project
Develop reputation, as evidenced by invited or peer reviewed presentations at conferences and / or national publications.
Experience in the development and execution of educational resources such as courses and / or practice guides.
Experience working with various industry stakeholders
