Rochelle News-Leader | Kish Announces Spring High School Art and Writing Winners


MALTA – Kishwaukee College has announced the winning selections for the Spring 2022 Juried High School Student Art and Creative Writing Exhibition.

The exhibit featured drawings, paintings, photography, digital media, mixed media, sculpture, ceramics, prose and poetry from high school students throughout the Kishwaukee College District, including DeKalb, Hiawatha, Indian Creek, Rochelle and Sycamore high schools.

Visual art was judged by a panel of Kishwaukee College art professors and written submissions were judged by English professors. The winning selections are below and artist names are listed as requested.

Best of Show — Displayed suffocation by Cora Early, Sycamore HS.

Black & White Drawings — 1st Alternative from the 80s by Vivianne Potts, Sycamore HS; 2n/a Bentley by Brianna Chamoun, Sycamore HS; 3rd“Shoe” by Dylan Benge, Rochelle Township High School.

Color drawing — 1st 1st Pre-calculation period by Marlen Hueramo, RTHS; 2n/a life on fire by Mira Ryu, Sycamore HS; 3rd hands of nature by Rachel Piscopo, Hiawatha HS; Honorable mention, Mr. Creative by Uriel Valle, RTHS.

Painting — 1st Tangled in sinking time by Chrissie Fischer, Hiawatha HS; 2n/a On the road by Marlen Hueramo, RTHS; 3rd wonder boy by Eric Briseno, RTHS; Honorable mention, goo man by Abby Johns, Sycamore HS.

Sculpture/Ceramics — 1st modern history by Molly Sapita, Sycamore HS; 2n/a Astonished by Arianna Moser, Hiawatha HS; 3rd Poker face by Loryn Heil, Sycamore HS; Honorable mention, stay safe by Lucy Bunger, RTHS.

Photography/Digital Media — 1st fruit bow by Alaina Leal, RTHS; 2n/a Fire hazard by Kylie Davis, RTHS; 3rd The clock by Ayla Walker, RTHS; Honorable mention, frozen stream by Allie Mortenson, RTHS.

Mixed technique — 1st house shades by Autumn Tomlinson, Sycamore HS; 2n/a Untitled by Janis Schnurr-Trebe, Sycamore HS; 3rd It’s an elephant by Marisa Whaley, RTHS; Honorable mention, To block by Katie Horn, Sycamore HS.

Poetry — 1st “Oh How We Spin” by Darion Massey, DeKalb HS; 2n/a “Nobody Cared About the Flowers” by Arianna Harrison, Sycamore HS.

Prose—1st “The Desolation of Icarus” by Andrew Miller, Indian Creek HS; 2n/a “Her Brotherhood” by Irish McCoy, Sycamore HS.

The public is invited to view the winning selections at the Kishwaukee College Art Gallery through April 14. The gallery is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
