Zimbabwe: visual artist reflects on new exhibition

Contemporary visual artist Gresham Tapiwa Nyaude has embarked on a journey of self-reflection in his highly anticipated first local solo exhibition since 2017.

Entitled ‘Gray Spaces’, the exhibition which opened at the First Floor Gallery Harare recently mirrors Nyaude’s life with a dramatic new suite of major paintings and a unique installation project to reflect on having 33 years as an age demanding insight and wisdom, especially in the age of Covid-19.

Born in 1988 and raised in Mbare, Nyaude is one of the most successful painters of Zimbabwe’s younger generation of painters.

His dramatic and satirical paintings, based on visualization of Shona proverbs and contemporary urban slang, challenge characterization moving with restless energy between easily identifiable symbols, abstraction and surrealism.

While responding emotionally to the problems of his own environment, as a painter, Nyaude also engages in conversation with broad ideas about art and art history locally and internationally.

His works have been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, with exhibitions in Shanghai, China, Berlin, London, San Francisco and New York, with works at the Smithsonian Museum of African Art in Washington, DC, at the Rubell Family Collection and at the Museum of Contemporary African Art al Maaden in Marrakech, among others.

Nyaude is one of the few internationally renowned Zimbabwean artists who remains committed to exhibiting in Zimbabwe and sharing his work with local audiences as a priority.

“For me, Harare’s audience is my inspiration and my truth. Exhibiting around the world is fantastic, but I know that I can only truly be understood at home,” Nyaude said.

First Floor Gallery Marketing Director Marcus Gora described the exhibit as something not to be missed.

“Gray Spaces” is an exhibition of exceptional quality of a major talent, “he said.

“This is something not to be missed.”

First Floor Gallery is one of the region’s premier contemporary art spaces with spaces in Harare and Victoria Falls

He is proud to have a number of famous emerging artists who have gained wide international recognition.
